Description

1877 Selden Truck

"George B. Selden invented, in 1877, the first internal combustion gasoline engine for road locomotion. This was the beginning of the world's second largest industry. History affords no more startling record of achievement than the development of the automotive industry, which resulted from this remarkable invention by Selden." Selden Truck Corporation

For consignment, an 1877 Selden Motor Wagon reproduction, a striking example of a self propelled buggy at a time when horses were still the primary source of travel.

Exterior
Glossy black paint adorns the wood construction of the Selden with gold trim and graphics that are bordered in red, the perfect complement to the red wood spoked wheels with the rears being larger than the fronts which have a lower axle to accommodate the engine. The visible powertrain wears a coat of shiny charcoal paint with contrasting yellow ignition wires and chunky metal cogged gear wheels that transfer power to the axle. Brass hardware is found throughout the exterior including on the front light posts, valves on the engine, the brake, and wheel hardware. Buggy springs make up the suspension for this motor wagon.

Interior
A diamond tufted black vinyl bench seat is provided to guests in the back as well as to the driver in front, who is at the helm, controlling the vehicle with a wood rimmed brass steering wheel that sits horizontal with a crude pedal to the far left. Polished wood is under the driver providing a storage compartment adorned with more brass hardware and the floor is coated with a rubberized mat.

"George Selden conceived - but didn't build - a gasoline powered vehicle in 1877 and received a patent in 1895. The Association of Licensed Automobile Manufacturers enforced Selden's patent, but Henry Ford fought ALAM in court. Ford ultimately won, freeing the auto industry from paying royalties and making himself a folk hero". The 1907 Selden Motor Buggy is on display at the Henry Ford Museum, from which this information was gleaned. This is a fantastic showpiece of the very origins of the automobile industry and would be ideal in any enthusiast's collection or on display at any transportation museum.
